Vufine in the Field: Cinematography

We took Vufine out for a spin with a pair of Sony A7riis to capture some 4k footage at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Ca. To round out our set up we brought along the DJI Ronin Gimbal and an Easyrig to help support it. Using Vufine as our external monitor, we were easily able to capture some incredible footage without burdening our rig with an attached, external monitor. All footage shown is captured in 4K using a Vufine+ as an external monitor.

Vufine is a high definition wearable display that is an ideal solution for cinematographers. Simply connect Vufine via HDMI to any camera capable of outputting a 720p signal and you’re able to pull a live feed directly from your camera. We’ve taken a particular shine to the Sony A Series as the entire line is able to output 720p without affecting capture resolution. Beyond cameras, Vufine can connect to drones, smartphones, laptops, and tablets to provide a second monitor or mirrored display.

We made sure to test Vufine with as many versions of our set-up as we could, from simple handheld work to the full Ronin, Easyrig set-up – maybe a bit overkill for some basic nature shots, but we’ve never been one to turn down extra gear. In every set-up, Vufine made getting the perfect shot significantly easier. Sure, you could synch a monitor to the gimbal, or chase the viewfinder during handheld work, but why not save yourself the trouble so you can focus on the job at hand.

Maneuvering through location presents a handful of challenges, whether troublesome foliage or uneven surfaces, the last thing anyone wants to do is damage their camera. One of the biggest benefits of shooting with Vufine is the ability to maintain situational awareness. We were sure to walk the gimbal through the roughest areas of the park we could find and had no problems with our rig or, more importantly, our footage. Fortunately, it was a beautiful day and we we’re able to easily get all the shots we were looking for.

We already have users finding creative ways to utilize Vufine on set, everything from boom ops to documentarians. We know every shoot is unique presenting a bevy of unforeseen challenges, and we would love to hear about the interesting uses you’re able to come up with beyond what we’ve already tested. As always, thank you for your support!

Best,
